The name Iolite comes from the Greek word io, which means violet flower. Iolite is a pleochroic stone, meaning that when viewed from different angles the stone varies in colour from purple-blue to yellow-grey. This property allows Iolite to be used as a polarized viewing lens which can detect the position of the sun in the sky even in overcast conditions. Ancient Vikings used thin sheets of Iolite as navigational aids giving the stone the nickname “Vikings’ Compass”. This stone has a hardness of 7-7.5 and can be found in Brazil, Bolivia, Burma, Canada, Norway, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Sweden and the United States.
Iolite is said to unlock creativity, heal the eyes, sooth sleep disturbances, lower cholesterol and resolve financial difficulties, clears negative thought patterns, banished the blues and encourages one to be secure in oneself and face fear heads on.
Some of its physical healing properties include treating fever producing disorders and helping the body to produce regulatory chemicals in the correct proportions for healthy expression.
Emotional properties: It is said to help one to be in touch with and clear for communication with ones higher purpose, eliminates feelings of being trapped on earth plane and opens one to living ones purpose.
