Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. The name “garnet” comes from the Latin term Punica granatum, meaning pomegranate (the red seeds were said to be similar in shape size and color to garnet crystals). It comes from the mineral silicate and has a hardness of 7 – 7 1/2. Although this stone is most commonly seen in a deep red it also comes in orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink and colorless. Some of its physical healing properties include enhancing the body in assimilation of iodine, calcium, magnesium and vitamin A and E.It also helps to integrate experiences and assist one in self- discovery, provides a protective influence, a connection to other dimensions, helps the wearer to recognize flashes of insight and apply them in the appropriate place in their life. Red garnet also called pyrope is found in Czech Republic, Germany, Mauritania, Russia, South Africa and the United States. Green garnet also called grossular is found in Germany, Kenya, Madagascar and Tanzania.
