Moonstone has a hardness of 6-6.5 and owes its name to the beautiful shimmer it gives off. The ancient Romans believed oonstone to be the solidified rays of the moon. The moonstones’ shimmer is due to its inner molecular structure which refracts and scatters light rays within the stone, causing it to shimmer when viewed from different angles. In India, moonstone is regarded as a “dream stone” which brings the wearer beautiful visions at night. Placed under a pillow a piece of moonstone is also said to give a deep and peaceful sleep.
