Freshwater cultured pearls are grown in mussels from freshwaters such as lakes and rivers. They result from small tissue being inserted into the fleshy mantle of the host mussel through a small opening in a mussel’s shell. The insertion will cause the mussel to start producing nacre which is what pearls are made of. The value of pearls in jewelry is determined by a combination of the luster, color, size, lack of surface flaw and symmetry. Pearls are the birthstone for the month of June and have a hardness of 3 ½ – 4 ½. The color of pearls varies according to their environment. They can be found in China, Japan and the United States.
In Eastern cultures, pearls are believed to bring about purity and spiritual transformation. To wear a pearl reminds the wearer to be honest, pure, wise, and to walk with the utmost dignity.
